Getting new sump, need skimmer picked tho
So im having my lfs build me a new 20 long sump/refugium.
I am having them make as much in sump skimmer and refugium as possible, other then that keep it simple. I need to pick a skimmer out first dont i so that they can design to fit. I want to spend around 150 if possible and get an in sump skimmer. Any suggestions? |

A 20 long is pretty tight. Only 12" wide. Why not save money and have glass baffles cut and put them in your self? It cost me $20 for my sump/tank and $30 for the glass cut to size. Only a few $$$ for silicone. For a little over $50 you can make that sump.

Reef Octopus classic 150 space saver fits nice but it's in the $260 range.

My current tank is a 40 Breeder with a 20g long sump.
I have had an SC Aquariums-301 protein skimmer running in it for over a year, and I have been more than happy with it. It has a standard design and a very small footprint, and it performs like a champ! Here's a link and GL! http://www.scaquariums.com/product-p/sca-301.htm

Your last set of baffles are backwards. You want them to be under, over under, not vice versus. The idea being that the water wont fall creating bubbles, which is exactly what your trying to stop with a bubble trap.
Have a look through this link, it explains it better then me. http://gmacreef.com/reef-aquarium-sump-tank-design/

You can do it either way, but the proper way is the opposite of what you have. If you read the link to GMAC reef it explains why you want it reverse of what you have.
We all do things slightly different, but I was just trying to point out a proiblem before it arises.

The article states to control bubble's you can
Lower your flow rate Use a siphon base over Place the skimmer far away from the return Or minimize the distance the water has to fall Then we get to the reason they want the baffles that way. They are afraid of debris getting trapped but this doesn't take into consideration the skimmer and the possible use of filter socks. |

My sump baffles are set 'over-under-over' also, and I have never seen the contrary. The water drop is less than an inch, and it cascades down the baffle.

99% of the designs are that way. That's how I knew right away his statement was wrong. When I was looking up sump designs before I made mine I remember coming across that sight and thinking that's different and then moving on. There are a lot of different ways to design a sump.
