Paying for tank maintenance.

How much should one expect to pay for monthly maintenance ( water change, filter sock change, etc.)?

Hoping u don't plan to go a month between sock changes. U should change socks every 3 to 5 days.

It would probably help to keep in mind that no one here has any obligation to answer your questions or provide any help to you. Being rude to someone who's offering help, even if it wasn't exactly what you're looking for, is not a good way to encourage others to also try to help you.

My father, who has a 90 gallon reef tank, doesn't like to do the big maintenance himself. He changes sock filters every couple days on his own and feeds them, but that's about all.

He pays about $180 a month plus mileage. That includes, a new sock filter, skimmer cleaning, 20% water change, and glass cleaning both inside & out.

He didn't offer me any help. He took one part of my post and made an obvious statement with no relevance to the question asked which is all to common here.

Someone that regularly buys coral from me has asked to do do the upkeep on his tank and not necessarily monthly, he hasn't specified how often but I have never paid for such a service and figured there would be some folks here who had in the past or are currently

Yes! Most of his cost is in time and not materials. I imagine he charges about $2 a gallon for mixed saltwater. So factor that in for larger tanks and the added time to clean.
He would always siphon the sand bed and made sure the auto top off RO/DI unit was within reasonable TDS.
I'd say he is pretty reasonable, given the time he spends at each job site.

In Columbus, at least $60/hour plus expendables and that was for freshwater

I wasn't trying to be an @$$....just that if you plan to pay someone to take care of your tank, unless you plan to do some of the maint yourself, u should skip the socks.

I would suggest checking with the LFSs for rates on tank maint. Though u could get lucky and find someone on here who is local that would do it for reasonable amount. I wouldn't expect to pay less than $50-75

U need to chill man....it was not obvious that you know anything. Most people who hire out their tank maintenance would not know better, nor want to know

When I was working with a lfs our prices varied from fw to sw. It would be based on how many gallons and what type of system. We would do as much as a $1 a gallon to as little as $.10 a gallon with a minimum price. Wouldn't do anything for less than $60. Wasn't worth the time.

It also depends on location, bigger cities cost more. I think $2 to $3 a gallon is a good place to start. You can go to $1 per gallon on larger tanks.

That would be labor, water and additives would be extra.

2 years ago, I went out of town for 3 months. I had one teen at home. He was able to do daily feeding and water top offs.
I paid $80/trip for a bi-weekly 20% w/c and tank cleaning of my 110 gallon reef, which included water and chemicals. So $160 a month.
It wasn't the same standard I would have kept the tank, but it survived my being gone for so long.

I was told $75/hour per person plus extras (water) needed to move a tank which I think was what they basically charge for maintenance too.
