Where do you keep your tank at home?
Hi everyone!
Aspiring reefer here who is trying to figure out stuff for example where is the best place to place my tank. I would love to see pictures of everyone's tanks and where they are placed in your homes! Also some input on how far away the tank should be from walls and electronics like computers or TV would be appreciated. This is the place where I'm planning on putting my tank! http://i.imgur.com/opeWEIt.jpg My computer monitor would be quite close to the tank, about 15 inches away from the tank. Would my monitor get ruined? :x |

I keep mine on the back wall of my living room. It is about 6" from the wall and has a few feet on either side and in front. Here is a picture when I was setting up the 120 and there is about a 3' walkway between my tank and the couch. I have never had any issues other than some salt spray on the wall from my old setup.

Kept my 10 gallon in the living room, didn't ever really distract too much from the TV. Current 65 is in my sitting room.

I have a 4 year old with adhd and a few other sensory issues plus a 10 month old baby. So I put mine in our bed room. We just make the bed room off limits unless we are with them.
I already regret it, first my wife loves naps and on the weekend I can't get any cleaning or tank work done while her and the kids are down but the noise at night is the toughest part. It doesn't make much noise but when it does it will wake me up from a dead sleep and I will check on the tank. I finally added a moon light with remote so I can switch it on from bed just to take a look Also you have to have your bed room clean and bed made to show guests the tank. In the past our room was the room where everything "extra" went so it has ment more work for me.

I'm big on the idea of one focal point in a room. That being said I keep my 29 gal in the living room on the side wall adjacent to the TV (in a corner) but very near the couch and opposite the other couch (large sectional that rounds the corner opposite the tv).
I must look at the tank 10x more that the TV. IMO, put it somewhere where you can sit and watch comfortably for long periods of time. It's about 3 feet from a window, but I keep the shades down on that window (the view is only of a my neighbors house anyway). |

I keep my tank in the main floor living room. Aesthetically it would fit much better along the wall in our dining room, but I'd only see it 1/10th of what I see when it's in the living room.
As far as off the wall, I push mine as close the wall as possible. I leave about 3-6 inches to run wires to my lights and other things, but that's it. Ideally it would be right up against the wall. Be careful, though, if you have any opening in the back you will eventually get salt spray and water on your wall. In my new house I used greenboard on the wall behind the tank, and will add a vinyl covering on top of that. It'll be behind the tank, so you won't see it.

Freshwater planted 75 is in the living room, Reef 75 is a peninsula-style room divider between the dining room and living room (there's no dining room table though, I plan to put a papasan chair there for viewing, and my 12 gallon cherry shrimp planted tank is also in the dining room. You can see the cheery shrimp tank thru the salty 75. I have a chair right between the 2 75s where I can sit and stare at both

I've kept mine in the living room and computer room in the past. I'm not doing the living room this time because it's now my theater room and I can't have the light pollution and the computer room doesn't have any more room so the next tank is going in my kitchen eating area in a spot that doesn't get hit by window light.

Keep mine in the dining room. Makes for nice viewing while drinking coffee in the morning and during dinner at night.

Unfinished basement leaves a lot of open room and is very forgiving. Second choice would have been the ground floor of the house, but not enough room really and not drilling through the floors.

I had a 65 gallon in the living room but it was hard to clean and take care of with the kids running around and trying to get into it. Also toting water through the house was driving my wife insane. So I got to upgrade to my current 180 gallon to in wall set up since the wife was nice enough to let me make a fish room in the bedroom when I changed the garage into the new master bedroom. Im still in the process of finishing it but will try to get a picture later today

I have a small house. The living room and dinning room are basically one big room. I have my JBJ 28g in the corner of the dinning room. If I'm watching TV the TV is on one wall and if I turn around and look at the opposite wall I can see my tank. If I eat at the dinning table (which has been over run by fish stuff) I can easily see the tank while sitting. I always believe in having the tanks where you can see them easily on a daily basis. Otherwise why have it? When I had my 70g it was in the same spot and when I had my 55g goldfish tank it was on the side wall in the living room.

Mine is installed in the wall between my living room and dining room so it's visible from both rooms.
I will say that distance from the wall is a tough thing to get right. The first tank I had was probably a good 6 or 8 inches from the wall because I was using an external overflow box and that was as close as it could get. I hated how far it was from the wall, though, because I didn't think it looked very good, so when I set up my second tank with an internal overflow I got it back as close to the wall as I possibly could... probably no more than an inch between the tank and the wall and even less between the stand and the wall. It looked much better, however once it was filled with water and I started setting up the equipment I discovered that it was also very difficult to run cables for lights and sensors and such behind the tank. In fact, when I got my MP10 pumps I had to disassemble the controller and disconnect the cable so I could get the controller under the stand and still allow the cable to run out to the pump. This time the tank is in the wall, so distance from the wall isn't really a concern, but if I had to put another tank against a wall I'd probably compromise and leave maybe 2 inches to allow a little more space for running things behind the tank, but still not looking too terrible. The other thing I'll add is that if installing it in the wall or setting it up as a peninsula is an option for you then you should definitely consider it. I absolutely love being able to see the tank from both sides... it gives me much more space to place corals, since they can go on either side of the rocks and it also means that I see my little shrimp and crabs and such much more than I did with the other tank because they can't hide between the rocks and the back of the tank. |
