Mine turns brown like that when it's depleted. I'd suggest replacing that. It should completely fill the container btw.

When filling make sure to fill the whole canister all the way to the top. No voids.

Yes the DI resin is depleted. Just buy some more and repack it. It's a daily simply process.

When you refill, pack it to the top. Tap it down on a flat surface leaving just enough for the cap to fit. Depletion is determined when your TDS coming out of the DI side is above 0. Some people go higher than that like 3-5 TDS. Me no. When mine hits 1-2, it gets changed. This is regardless of what it looks like.

The cation and anion resin beads have separated. This happens when the bed is not packed tightly enough.

If you ever see what looks like color change starting at the TOP of the DI Cart, hat's a good hint that the bed has fluidized and the beads have separated by specific gravity (weight). Dump the resin out, mix, add more, and re-pack the cartridge tightly.

Slightly off topic... Make sure your membrane is working properly. If it's getting old you are going to go thru more more Di resin faster then normal.https://www.premierh2o.com/pages/tds-calculator

Get a dual in line TDS meter and monitor TDS post RO membrane and post DI resin. Check your source water's TDS, the post RO TDS should be about 5% or less of the source water. Replace the DI resin when the TDS post DI is greater than 0.

FWIW not all resin is color changing. Also, when the resin does change color often times there is still life left in the resin. Just my 2 cents.
