Transferring to a 45 ga JBJ. Need help!

Hello!

So I'm sort of at a sand still with my transfer. I'm trying to thoroughly think everything through before actually starting the process. Here are my ideas...

The JBJ comes with 2 media intanks. I plan to fill one with just filter floss ontop and the bottom with seachem matrix. The 2nd media intank with filter floss Purigen and chemipure.

I also plan on dropping a sock filled with carbon in the back sump somewhere.

I'm also going to get a skimmer. I've heard people buying auto top offs but I really don't want to get into that? Is it really necessary?

So besides the filtration... My plan is to move my live rock which is already established in my 29 ga and I'm going to buy new dry sand.

If anyone has any recommendations or ideas please pass them my way!!!

Thank you!

I will say that I consider the auto top off to be the best piece of equipment I have ever bought. I never had it on previous tanks that was a reason why I let the tank get into poor shape.

If you have had tanks get a little neglected in the past (as I have), you learn what types of maintenance you hate. Maintenance eventually stops getting done as frequently if it isn't something you enjoy, and the tank suffers. My new tank is set up with all of those things in mind: easy top off, easy (and less frequent) water changes, easy maintenance of calcium and alk.

And what is the main purpose of an auto top off?? Sorry I've only been in the hobby for about 8 months

As the water goes evaporating it replenishes it?

Yes. This keeps your salinity more stable than you can if you top it off by hand. The alternative is to dump fresh RODI water into the aquarium as often as you remember to do it (and the appropriate volume).

Oh ok I see what your saying! I think once the new tank is up and running I will invest in one.

Any opinions on the media intank? Does the filtration I'm thinking of using sound ok?
