Tips for the Coralife Hang-on Skimmer:

1. to keep it from spitting outside the tank on a power-glitch, use two lengths of 1/4 airhose over the two nipples for air and directing any backflow into the tank. Easy done, worry free.
2. periodically disconnect it entirely, take it into the back yard and turn a garden nozzle into its guts full-force. Gunk that may have collected will come flooding up the center column and can be dumped. Rinse-repeat until satisfied.

It's a good inexpensive skimmer, but is a little cranky about spitting and does need cleaning as above. I have a 200, and would rate it really nice for a 50-75 gallon lightly stocked.

Lol, having had the CSS 220 hang on once myself many years ago I can't say I disagree w/ Heathlinder, but I suppose sk8r's tricks will help if that is what you got, but there are many better options for around the same price.
They are on the list of skimmers I will never buy again, w/ prizm and backpack leading that list.

I thought my advice was sound, no need to have a flood over crappy equipment.
It's probably better not to run one at all unless you just want it for oxygenation.
