Sump refugium

I want to rebuild my DIY sump using the biggest tank I can fit and chuck the 20. It was for my 40g tank then 55g and now it is not very safe for the 90g. I've had one to many over flows with it. I have the over flow/baffle/refugium/bubble trap/return standard set up now. Problem is my macro algae is not thriving and hair algae is taking over.

I'm thinking about just having a section of rock for bio filtration. No light or algea. Pro cons? What do you have? The only thing I could think of is fewer pods. I don't have a reef rank. Only a few corals.
