Placing a tank beside a fireplace
My husband asked me if we put a 60 cube to the right of our fireplace/insert, the back side of the tank and the fireplace would be on the same wall. The area is 40 inches wide, the stanks is 36 inches and the tank is 24 by 24 inches.
Do you think that it will get too warm when we have a fire? We have that insert with a fan and it blows the heat straight out into the room. It has doors so we do not have an issue with soot or ash dust. |

I don't have a fireplace, or have ever seen a tang beside one. to me that sounds a little like its not the best idea.
There's literally no other place for the tank?

I've seen this question posted before. You might try searching the forum for "fireplace".

I will look again. I had searched before I posted and all the post that I found were old and none were for the location that I am looking at.

My tank abuts the fireplace. The masonry gets warm but I think all it does is cut the electric bill on my heaters in the winter a little - not a problem at all.

Have you run the fireplace and set a thermometer in the spot where the tank would be closest to it? How warm/hot did it get?

You will have no problem with heat gain, unless you ran your fireplace 24/7 during the winter.

I am not a fan of putting things near or above a fireplace from an aesthetic point of view. One focal point is better than two. IMO, TVs or aquariums, are better on an adjacent wall.
As for the heat, if it's a real fireplace with a screen, they can throw off a ton of heat nearby if using wood (as opposed to duraflames) . Also, they create low oxygen areas. |

Eh, some units (MINE) use outside air intake, so I wouldn't worry about the oxygen. Plus the exhaust fumes go up the chimney, right? Further, if Ph becomes a problem a CO2 filter I'm sure would help but I wouldn't think moving the tank a few feet would be significant due to the fireplace. Even units that don't have an outside air duct will pull air from the cracks and such from the outside of the house. Actually one without the outside intake would probably have less CO2, I'd think. Either way - not pertinent.
I had a tank a few feet away from a free standing stove with no discernible problems. To the side of the unit the radiant heat wouldn't be an issue. Now, if you put it right in front of the glass, yeah, that might be a problem...but you aren't going to do that. |

One end of my 220gal is about 4' from my coal stove. That stove gets HOT during the winter and I've had zero issues. Though my tank is pretty big and I don't have a cover. I like my system around 80f and I still have to use a heater year round.
