Maxspect Gyre Mounting Option for Under Cap or Euro Brace
So I’ve been wanting to try these for a while now, but having a dual bullnose racetrack style tank kept me from pulling the trigger. From everything I read, to really get optimum performance, the gyres needed to be mounted on the ends of the tank. The acrylic on my tank is 1” which also posed an issue. Well I decided to get two of the new XF280 pumps with the advanced controller and see if they would work by mounting them under the tank’s cap, much like a Euro brace on a glass tank. Well, they worked super and held extremely well except for one thing, when running in reverse gyre, they would suck water in causing mild cavitation. I really wanted to run these in reverse gyre mode, so here is my solution which may give others an idea if they want to go down this path. If I had it to do it over, which I may eventually, I would use even stronger magnets. These work, but I would like them to hold even stronger.

I've been thinking about how to do this. Nice job!
I have a few questions before I try this for myself. Am In correct that those magnets are holding the boxes to the brace and the gyre to the box? Did you coat the magnets with anything to make them waterproof? I recently lost my entire SPS collection to a rusting magnet in a probe holder and do not want to go through that again. Did you consider making one larger box and using the gyre outside magnet to hold the gyre to the box? What is the thinking behind allowing water to flow into the boxes? Is there a downside to making them waterproof so you don't have to worry about the magnets rusting. And if the magnets release, the box might float the gyre and keep it from crashing down on your corals. What are the box dimensions? How deep does the gyre sit in the water in order not to cavitate?

What size tank is that? Also, you could just got the TUNZE 6055 and mounted them where ever you wanted since there magnet's are super strong.. Also you can turn them what ever way you wanted. Facing up or facing down.. If I were you acesq, would HIGH recommending going with the Turbelle Tunze pumps that are controllable.. They blow the Maxpect Gyres away! I own a 120 that's 48'' x 24'' x 24'' and I went with the 6055's that push anywhere from (250-1450 GPH)... The problem with the Gyres is after you clean them every other month they are an absolute nightmare to put back togerther, bushings, propellers, etc etc vs the Tunzes which are super easy to clean and maintain.

I have a gyre 150 and a few of the smaller Tunze pumps, the issue is hanging them upside down on the eurobrace. My water line is a good 2 inches below the brace and the gyre 150 cavitates when I attach it to the eurobrace. I assumed a Tunze 6205 which would be the right size for me would cavitate as well. Do you have your 6105's attached to the eurobrace?

#1 - The boxes I made use magnets to hold to the Gyre itself, and then to the magnets that would normally hold the gyre through the glass or acrylic pane. All they really do is extend the exact same function of how gyres are held onto a tanks pane. #2 - The magnets are sealed in the acrylic holder/boxes I built for them, so they are waterproof without the need of any sealing coat on the magnets. #3 - Refer to answer #1. They are simply extensions to how the gyre are normally held onto a tank's pane. #4 - Only the ends of the boxes are sealed. I routed out the tops and drilled a hole in the side to allow some water movement to prevent stagnation. Due to the natural amount of air inside the chambers where the magnets are causes the boxes to float. #5 - The boxes are roughly the same size the the magnetic areas of an XF280's mounting base and paired holding magnets. Depending on the gyre chosen will determine the size of the box necessary. The cages sit 3" below the water surface and will no longer cavitate. Hope that answers your questions. |

I've owner EcoTech, Tunze, and even Jebao. The problem with a dual bullnose/racetrack style tank is getting the flow correct inside the tank. Pump placement can be very fickle. When I had a rectangle 180, the EcoTech worked good except I really liked being able to aim my pumps, hence I went with Tunze. Fantastic pumps I controlled off of my Apex. This is a 450G tank that is 8' long. A nice wide flow that the gyre provide is simply great. My problem was mounting them. I could mount them like the Tunze (or Jebao for that matter), but then I would be dealing with flow problems again. That's why I made this stand-off mounts. Things are fantastic now and these XF280 with their Advanced Controller work great. |

Ive also been thinking about this. I did think having something like this but with different dimensions would work...
The top would slide onto the bracing leaving the longer bit hanging down into the tank. Maybe put some nylon screws in the top to clamp onto the bracing but really the gyre will be pushing back on the whole thing keeping it in place. also, I asked Maxspect if the dry side magnets are waterproof and they said they were. Kind of gave up on the idea for now but one day I will persue it. |

Hate to pull up an old thread, but making a 3d printed eurobrace holder. Here is the link to the print if you need.
