White/Brown Slime Taking over Tank

I have a white slime that turns brown taking over my tank.

From reading it seems it's a type of airborne bacteria that grabs hold in the tank.

But I haven't found any sources that give specifics on how to eliminate it.

anyone have any thoughts on this?

Good Lord, I feel your pain! Some reefers call it sick tank syndrome.

I don't need to see any pictures because I already know what your talking about. Wouldn't wish it on any reefer.

My reef got it about 3 years ago.

Came into my tank when my wife cleaned the carpets.

It comes from ---"AEROSOLS" --- like Glade Air Fresheners.

I'm sorry to tell ya this can be a long a painful recovery for a reef.

I've read some people say they had success with "DrTim's Aquatics Waste-Away".
Read it after my reef healed, so I've never used it.

I did all the water changes in the world a took 4 months the get it to stop and count my coral losses.

Tagging along to see if others have found a proven and fast cure over water changes and time.

What ultimately worked for you? just keeping up with water changes and keeping nutrients low?

I did so many water changes over that 4 month span that I wasn't worried about keeping my nutrients low. They had to be super low with the amount of water changes I was doing. 25% water changes twice a week.

Maybe I shouldn't have done those water changes but couldn't think of anything else to do.

The only thing I know... It's rare, but if your reef catches it... It can be a long haul.

The only thing I ever saw some use to help was "DrTim's Aquatics Waste-Away".

I don't know of a quick cure and there's so little written about it.

That's why I'm tagging along too.

for me water changes did nothing DR TIMS waste away did nothing, but keeping my rodi water container sealed up tight and regularly cleaning it out along with my mixing container. i really think its from my house being sealed up so tight(new pgt wingard windows). now that its winter here in florida i can finally open my windows. i think stale indoor air was my problem....

I say this,

1) If your carbon dosing or using any salt mixes like Tropic Marin Bioactif that has a carbon source in the salt mix then stop using any of if for the time being. You'll just be feeding it.

2) If you don't use RO/DI water, then you need to now.

3) Keep your system up to a good oxygen level.

4) Lower your temp to 76.5 degrees.

I don't know if yours matches OP's but not mine, it came from "air borne aerosol" in carpet cleaner cans and was WAY worse than yours.

I use 4 stage BRS ro/di unit with TDS meter built in. I wished it was only yhe RO/DI unit needed to be cleaned and filters changed. My filters and DI has to be change about every six weeks. Not 4 months.

If OP does what fixed your problem and it helps him then I'll jump for joy for him!

Opening windows could help.

I raise mine all the time to keep my PH up.

I also plumbed my skimmer air intake into garage for fresh oxygen and it helps hold my PH too.
