$99 PurpleTangs!
Yup only catch is they're at Petco, I'm one of the few lucky ones that has a Petco with a fish guy that loves and takes care of the fish department like his own. They just got them in yesterday at all Petcos these suckers are huge! The less time they sit at Petco and get to your QT the better! Cheers.

You mean purple? $99 is a good deal for a large one.

Yea! Hundreds of tangs going to their deaths. They have ZERO scruples. Have a 10 gallon, sure that'll be good for your tank.

I was at Petco last week picking up crickets for my son. Cricket bucket was right next to the saltwater tanks. I saw two purple tangs for $99 each...both had ick. We have a place called ACC Aquarium Care Center who usually sells them for $120

ACC isn't the best place to buy. Most of the live stock have a 50/50 chance of survival that why everything is always on sale to move them quickly to your tank to die

Just my experience...
I bought a Purple Tang from a Petco a few months ago. It's alive, well, and doing fine as I type this. Though I will say I have bought *all* of my other fish elsewhere, because I do not generally find the Petco's tank conditions acceptable. |

Yeah the guy said that these purple tangs didn't come form their normal suppliers because they don't carry them. I forgot which company he said.

I believe Petco and Drs Foster and Smith are one and the same. I read that last week. I think they mean well, I really do but the fact remains, the "good guy" at your local store that treats the store as his own tank won't be the one to wait on folks every time someone wants to buy livestock and that's why they have the rep they do.

A Petco fish adequately qt'd will be just fine.

I agree. It's just that most reefers don't go to Petco so they are left selling these magnificent animals to Joe public. Guess that's what makes our country great, to be able to choose, but it can also breed ignoarnce.

I worked out there but I am from NJ. Honestly the best thing to do is post what you want to buy on forum. Someone always has something they don't want and are happy to sell. All my fish I bought from Petco special order or from fellow reefers. You just have to find the right Petco. There's an Amazing one in Bridgewater. They have an excellent saltwater section and an Amazing worker (shout out to Brian)

Exactly right. I'd not hesitate to buy there because I do QT.

I understand every store is different, so if my comments do not apply to a certain store, that's cool.
The simple fact is that I have a number of high quality saltwater specialty stores within reasonable driving distance. Places that QT, that treat the animals with respect, that ask questions and make recommendations. I prefer to patronize these types of place. It's just a personal preference. I have been in my local Petco and seen stressed out fish, suffering from Ich, in crowded tanks, some with dead fish in them...and I just don't feel good about putting my money there. Can I buy a fish from Petco, QT it, treat it, make it healthy again, etc... Sure, probably. But as often as I read posts about how when we buy fish that should be left in the ocean we tell the retailer that there is a demand for that fish and go get more...I feel like when I buy from Petco I am telling them that I am cool with the deplorable conditions and to keep up the good work. I just choose not to do that. |

None of the Petco stores in my area even carry saltwater, unfortunately. If they did and I didn't already have a purple tang I would've bought one in an instant for $99. Unless it's a really hard to care for fish, I don't have an issue buying fish that have been poorly cared for or have issues that can be treated fairly easily while in QT. My purple was fairly small and beat-up when I got him from an LFS and I still paid in the $150 range. Now, he's fairly large and healthy almost 2 years later.

Yeah I fully understand, that's why I noted that my local Petco fish guy is very good with his fish keeping. I'm not speaking for every petco, but they just came in nationwide from what the guy told me. The less time they spend in a poor quality tank and right into your QT the better. I also have great locals fish stores in my area however they aren't selling purple tangs for $99. I just wanted to get the word out so good fish keepers can snatch them up and put them in good homes.

Local Petco has had them in for several weeks now. I've refrained from asking price because I really don't want one right now. But, it was awfully tempting!

First of all, be sure you have enough TANK for that fish, or you will be in for an emergency and spendy upgrade.
