Sump configuration - help please :)
Hello fellow reefers,
I am currently cycling my new reef tank, and I was wondering what the best setup would be for the EHEIM Marine Scubacube 165 Sump? I DON'T have the EHEIM TANK, I have a custom built one. approx 80x80x33cm, you can see it in my gallery. (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/al...?albumid=11344) These are the measures of the SUMP: http://www.shop-meeresaquaristik.de/...01::15415.html I attached some photos. It's going to be many a coral reef tank with very little fish. Thank you |

So you have a sump already right?
and Are you thinking about getting the EHEIM one instead? As to what to add depends on how automated you want to go and how you plan on managing nutrients,etc.. One can have a successful coral tank with tank/rock/sand/saltwater/powerhead/heater alone.. Everything else is basically a convenience that makes maintenance/management "easier"..

Ok..gotcha.. I thought "DON'T have the EHEIM tank" meant you hadn't purchased the sump yet..
Ok.. my "expertise $0.02".. ditch the bio filter media + filter pads.. Keep skimmer + return pump.. thats it The thin ATO reservoir area is basically useless IMO as your tank needs more fresh water than what fits in there I'd guess.. Unless you don't mind filling it up every few days (what 2-3 days max can fit in there maybe? depending on your location/humidity)..

I think its more beneficial to allow detritus,etc.. to freely flow through a reef tank to be consumed as food and not just trapped in a filter to rot..
And I think the biomedia you have there isn't sufficient to even be worth the time/maintenance.. A single small rock in the DT will do the same..

You could put 2 -3 reactors to help filter the system, if you like plain simple or
Remove the filter media add some live rocks & cheatomorpha or You could look into a block of marine pure also |
