Help!!! My fire shrimp of 2 weeks, is laying on its side with its legs crossed! It's been like this for at least 24 hours. And if you look at its tail it is pale. it is still alive though, I've seen motling and this looks nothing like it . So anyone know what's up with it?
My Params are
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10ppm
Temp 74
SG 1.025
KH is a little low at 7
Phosphates are at 0

I haven't had a fire shrimp in a long time but I know with skunk cleaners sometimes when they molt it really looks like the old shell is a dead shrimp. Did you check to see if it's actually the shrimp laying there? If it is ive never seen a shrimp lay on its side.

I have never seen shrimp laying like that. My cleaner shrimp got sick once and it's color faded but never did it lay down like that. I took extreme care of him and He recovered in about two weeks. If your water is fine and there is nothing that can eat him then just take some extra care for him. Spot feed him like feeding a coral...He can recover if he is taken care of properly.

I have a fire shrimp. Never seen it do that before. Looks dead. Fire shrimp are hardy creatures so I doubt your parameters had anything to do with it. I would get him out before he sends your nitrates skyrocketing

I called it last night, I have no idea what happened my calcium was very low at 310 but I have no idea why that would cause a problem, I have since raised it back up to 430ppm. I think maybe I dosed too much iodine but I'm not sure why that would cause a fire shrimp to die like that. So a mysterious death! I'm glad I caught it quickly though, I think I'm going to wait a week or so and look at getting a mother fire shrimp or a skunk cleaner

Don't forget that sometimes animals just die. You don't know how old the shrimp was when you got it or if it had any congenital abnormalities. Sometimes, animal deaths really aren't our fault.

Sorry to hear that. It happens and it's sad to see.

Did you mention tank size?
I definitely would not dose any kind of iodine/iodide if you are having "mysterious" shrimp deaths.
WCs will replenish trace elements. And salinity acclimation can take days, so if a fragile invert dies 2 weeks later--it could be this. If you didn't check bag water vs tank water SG, and didn't adjust over hrs or days dependent on extreme of range difference--it will kill it.

I'm saying, wait more than a few days before buying more shrimp--read-up on it please.

Its rare to see a fire shrimp die, never seen one die except for old age. Do you know the age of yours (or was it pretty big), they have really short lifespans around 3 years.

Also keep in mind elemental iodine (I2) is toxic. If you dosed to much of it might have killed it. What kind of salt mix are you using, dosing iodine is pretty much unnecessary with most modern salt mixes that have trace elements. Also do you have a kit to measure it? You should never dose something without having the means to measure it.

Tripod, exactly how long have you been in SW and how many shrimp have you bought?
The OP probably has better sense than you do.

I had my first sw tank 22 years ago. My dad had his for more than 40 years and we had at least one sw tank for as long as i can remember.

Right now i have 2 tanks at home and 1 at my office (40g, 125g and 150g). My dad has a 250g. In total i probably bought around at least 30 Lysmata shrimps (cleaner, blood and peppermint combined). For a long time we didn't had any skimmers so I am quite familiar with the effects of water chemistry on animals. My 150g still dont have a skimmer. I get a skimmer to the 125g when I started the 40g with a skimmer. It makes stuff lot easier but my oldschool dad still doesn't want one (he has a large refugium in a sun room for nutrient export).

Plus I am a molecular biologist, so that also helps with most of the stuff you deal with in this hobby.

How long have you been in in sw? I wonder since we started to question these.

Sorry Tripod I thought you were just reiterating what I had said.
I've been in FW for >30 years and SW only 13 years. I've had varying experiences w/ different species of shrimp as you have. I should check myself before I wreck myself. Peace dude

Anyway, I'd suggest that the OP do a large, 50%, WC before trying anymore fire shrimp IMO.
