Mixing Substrates

I am changing my substrate during a move and want to see if anyone has experience with mixing substrates. I am thinking of having 1" of sugar fine sand and .5" of the Carib sea Special Grade. I want the fine sand for wrasses but thought adding the special grade on top would limit sandstorms.

TIA

I think that over time, especially if you have anything digging in the sand, the heavier, more course sand will work it's way to the bottom and the lighter sugar sand will rise to the top. In the long run I don't think it will solve your problem.

You could try putting some Puca shell on top of the sand bed. This will definitely help with the sand storms and I'm sure the wrasses will find plenty of spots behind the rocks to bury themselves in.

I doubt if the wrasse would "dig around." They would just go under to sleep. I don't have sugar sand but another fine grade, can't think of it off hand. My yellow wrasse does not create much of a sandstorm.

Not to worried about the wrasses vreating the sandstorms, just the amount of flow in the tank.
