Chaeto questions

Sorry for the newbie questions but this is my first time using chaeto.

I put a small ball of chaeto into my fuge section and there are quite a few small pieces that came off the ball, is it bad if this gets into the DT?

Do I need to put some kind of a trap to stop it from getting out of the fuge section?

Thank you all!

It's best to trap it in the sump, otherwise it can clog your return pump. A simple piece of egg crate light diffuser works well a dam.

I planned on making a "cage" with egg crate, but these pieces seem like they'd still go through egg crate.

Use egg crate cage & purchase some canvas mesh sheets(Walmart) & wrap around

Is a 3-5watt LED enough to power chaeto?

Possibly. More importantly is how old is your system? Cheato doesn't do well in new setups because there isn't much for them to feed on.

Top recommendations for cheato lighting:
1, LED grow light (mix of blue/red LEDs),
2, Full spectrum LED
3, 5500K-6500K CFL, as powerful as you can possibly find.

Although this may not answer your question, I found the following video useful on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr1q5BkvO_o

The quality of their experiments is just fantastic. That is one of the most informative videos they have done to-date. I've always been a huge proponent of chaeto but even I am pleasantly surprised by those results.

That was a great video and I learned a lot from it. BRS rocks. The only thing I worry about is exporting pods to the DT. Originally that was my main objective with my fuge but after watching that BRS video I am rethinking things and may have to increase my light budget for my fuge!

Watch that BRS video and you will learn everything you need to know. Plan on spending a little more money because the benefits seem to be well worth it. I just don't want a red light so I am hoping to find something that still has plenty of Reds and blues but appears white.
