coral box qp-16

Just wondering if anyone has the Coral Box QP-16. Supposed to be very quiet and dependable.

I havent got the QP16 but as my Jebao RW4 went and broke I thought I would try a Coral Box QP5.

Wish I hadn't now. It's the noisiest pump I have ever had. Really makes a racket and it's been in the tank 1 day. I'm thinking of cutting my losses and throwing the thing in the bin it's that noisy.

Hi Joe,
i got my qp16 two weeks ago and i am very happy with it. I think the mp40qd is louder than the qp16....just my impression.

What I want to know is who/what is coral box and why do they repeatedly state "German Engineering" but they sure smell like a Chinese company with the product coming out of the same production facility as Jebao/Jecod,etc...

Did Jebao just find that there was a blonde hair German guy living down the street in China and they contracted him for some "design work"? Then just created another "doing business as (DBA)" name to their account?

I really don't see a real German company knocking off Jebao products so I'm curious..

I wonder the same thing.

But then I use a fair amount of Jebao equipment and it's been good to me. And if you buy it from Reef Breeders (Jebao or Coral Box) you know you'll get great customer service.

Hi,
as far as i undestand "Coral Box" is just a label of fish-street[dot]com which was founded in Hong Kong in 2000.
Looking on their website, it looks like it is only the impeller that is designed in Germany. I think there might be one company or the other that is doing things like that in germany so why shouldnt it be true? You may or may not be right that it is more like an advertising thing only and is done like by a chinese exchange student doing it at a german university. All that counts for me is that I put that thing in my tank and it produces a lot of flow. It is silent so far and that makes me happy :-)

Where did you get it? Can't you return it?

I had WP 40 pumps and ran them in wave mode going from full on to off a couple times a second 24/7. They died suddenly after a little over a year. I'm sure it was some electronic part imbedded in the epoxy motor block. Fishstreet was real good about sending new motor blocks.

It seems like wave mode was a passing phase, probably in no small part because so much off and on is hard on motors.

They say the QP series have no electronics in motor the block, a needed improvement, IMO.

The German engineering thing seems like a load to me but IDK...

So I was thinking about trying the QP but so far it looks like a 50% failure rate, could that be typical?

Check out those Aqua medic flow pumps, They are rebadged Jebao.
Last time I checked, AquaMedic is a real German company.

Back to the original topic, I have QP-16. They comes with a big controller and got rid of the round knob. Jebao/fishstreet/coralbox are all the same thing.

coral box qp-16

It is quiet, and the propeller looks a little different. I am not sure how dependable it is but with the price, I don't mind replace it every two years if it breaks.
There is really no rocket science in water pumps.

I got my qp16 8 weeks ago. And Yes - I am happy with it. It is running on full speed from the day 1.
Why did i choose the QP16? I had Tunze 6100 first. I thought after 10 year every new pump should be a win.
So a went with the new MP40QD. But 15mm of glas between the magnets seems to be to much for them.
The magnets are not holding the stream safely in place + it went louder and louder. After a couple af months my wife was almost freaking out.
So i tried the QP16 an lets say "she is happy with it"
Next step: change the remaining mp40qd for another qp16.
The only thing is: i dont like the powercord in my tank

greetings
Bjorn

QP5 here, only a month but so far it's doing great. Quiet and good control interface. It is the only powerhead in my 29 gallon and it's strong enough for my needs, but just barely.

Reason I stuck with the smaller one is I had read that the random modes on the jebao pumps only work at a full 0-100% and cannot be turned down. That does not appear to be the case on the QP pumps. Random mode can be set to max out at whatever percentage you want.

With this knowledge I probably would have gone one size bigger for my tank.
The QP5 gets er done just fine, but it would be nice to have some extra capacity for stirring things up one and awhile.

Yeah, no. I was wrong. With light stocking way too much detritus was accumulating. Doubled up on another QP5.

I just now bought a QP-9. Have not installed yet. Reefbreeder site says up to 16 pumps can be linked.

I have a CoralBox QP-16 and it is dead silent except for a faint electric whine. I can only hear it with my head right up against the tank.

-electric whine sound, yes.

Here is my take.
I have the CoralBox QP-5 series, one Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6040, and one Aqua Medic EcoDrift 4.1 Controllable Pump/Powerhead.

The fish room is almost silent, so I can hear all the noises and where they come from.
Kessil A80 (small, no fan model) keeps the noise down too as for lighting.

1.
The Coral box QP-5 is pretty neat as for price and options, but the high pitch electric ballast-like whine is present as stated from the previous reply.
It may be drowned out in a room that has more noises from equipment.

2.
The Aqua Medic 4.1 was the one that is the most quiet in my case of the silent tank room.
I can't hear a thing on the current alternating high/low pattern.
Only an ear near to or against the tank will allow me to hear it.
I'm not sure on the track record of the service of the parts for cleaning yet.

3.
Tunze 6040 is pretty nice, has a nice really track record, but has a low bass hum.
I use it one the High/low flow alternating method.
It sounds like silence, then comes the faint low hummm, silence low humm.
If you use it in the noisiest of the tanks in the room, the low bass humm may blend in.
Remember, this is all from a dead silent room.

If I had only one to choose, it would be the Aqua Medic 4.1 for the sound of nothing but my own presence...., but the reliable Tunze 6040 may be the smart choice for supposed longevity and just suck it up with the low bass hum.

The Coral box QP may get quiet over time mechanically, but the electric whine seems to be an electrical thing in my opinion.
I could get used to it, but as I hit the feed mode, the sound goes away immediately, so I know it does have sound if ears are well enough to still hear high pitch noises.
Older folks lose that high pitch aspect, so it may not be an issue to some individuals here.

Type this phrase listed in bold on youtube's search bar.
You will hear the high pitch described by me and the other member in the previous posts.

Some older folks like my father can't really hear that tone anymore, but i sure can.

Youtube search bar.
Coralbox QP-5 pump ( mechanical and electric pitches).
