Naming your fish

How many people name there fish? I never used to name my fish but after so many people asked me what my fishes names were I started naming them a few tanks back. Now I have two clown fish and have named them ia and shimmy. Anyways my real question is how many of you guys actually bother to name your fish?

I do!! It's a family affair and we all put a lot of thought in to it... i.e. Bryant is my Diamond Gobies name (Goby Bryant). Haha

We do, our clown fish are the Terror Twins, the scallop is Hot Lips. My pilot goby is Captain Nemo, the fox fish is just Foxy. The cardinal fish, His Grace, and my LTA hasn't been named yet. I also have 2 betas, Hank, and Dory . I don't have names for my tetras, but the big algae eater is named George.

My wife has named most of mine, malcolm the mandarin, angelica the coral beauty, barry the banggai, cedric and ursula the urchins and Fergus the flame angel, for some reason she hasn't named the clowns yet

Only if they survive the first month... it's just easier that way.

We have
Grump cat (bi-color blennie)
Shrimpy shrimp (skunk shrimp)
Houdini (Citrinus clown goby that kept ending up in the sump somehow)
Draggy (dragon goby)
Crabby crab (the one blue-leg hermit in the tank, that I'm not sure is still with us)

We had Jumper (cleaner wrasse)

In the freshwater tank we have
Macy (beta fish)
Striper (small catfish)

I do...
I'm sure that most people do..

The better question is who has the most marked graves in their backyard with an aquatic creature in them

I didn't when I first started, but then I got a Blue Hippo from my friend who had named him Charles. So after I had one named fish I gradually started naming the others. Now every fish gets a name. I try not to name them while they're going through quarantine though. It seems like my girlfriend really gets attached to them once they have a name, and sometimes they don't make it through QT and she gets more bummed if we've named them and they die. Once they get put in the DT we usually name them based on their personality.

Naming fish is a wife and young kids thing, chez moi at least . If a fish must get a name, any from the movies are out of bounds - names must show at least a modicum of originality. Boys named the Achilles Dave, though that was four years ago and nobody can actually recall why.

We do -- I mostly defer to my wife to do it:

Pair black clowns: Bert and Ernie
Kole Tang: Dory (I know...)
Yellow Tang: Big Bird
Royal Gramma & Mandarin: I forget at the moment...

Fresh water:
Angel: Khaleesi
Pair of rams: Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
Various tetras, raspboras, etc: the groupies

I let my girlfriend name them. Then she can't get mad at me when I spend $$$ on the tank

"But baby, this will make life better for Greedil (mandarin) or Gobi-Wan (Yasha gobi)"

works every time.

Naming the fish is part of the fun! My kids are older now one fish has a slightly profane name because he sits in corner all day. it started as bone-head but got worse lol

I did until I lost "Catfood" my favorite snowflake clownfish. Now I make it a point to not get attached anymore...

We name them, because stonogobiops nematodes is a mouthful. The escape-artist blenny: Houdini. The 4.7' domino, Ms Gold. The black and white, Mr Stripes. If they die, a replacement gets the name. This eases communication---"Have you seen Houdini today?"

All my fish are named except two blue chromis

My pair of black clownfish: OJ and Nicole
Purple Tang: Body Slammer (I let my nephew name him)
Melanarus Wrasse: Malikite
Watchman Goby: Frank (bc we figured that was a good generic security guard name)
Leopard Wrasse: Lea...as in princess lea
Lawnmower Blenny: MudChubbs (bc he's fat and looks like muddy mudskipper from Ren and Stimpy

OMG, I just got the cutest fish ever from LA!!! It's a flashlight fish, and all night he swims around flashing, so bright it lights up the sand underneath him. I named him Sparky! Now everyone say a prayer! I am usually pretty good with delicate fish, but have not had one of these before. Super hard to get, I was on an email alert for 4 years!

My oldest grand daughter names mine.....except for my Copperband Butterfly, he was named Beaker by his first owner...very descriptive.

Some of them do get called names by me when they are causing trouble.

This is why we name some of ours. We tend to use fairly direct, not very creative names. It's much easier to say "look at Rainford" than "look at the rainford goby." The clingfish is named Klinger. The tiger goby is Tig.

Wow, I love the name for your blueface angel, but then my ancestry runs heavily in Scotland and Ireland.
