Sump Socks
Hello RC peeps.
SO i just switched to a sump and it has been running beautifully for 3 days. I just changed my sock and while the other will be used for 2 days, I wanted to know how do I clean the dirty sock? Do I use soap to get it back white again? so far I have just been letting it soak in warm water. Thanks. I am new to the sump filtration and socks. I think I just might purchase a month supply worth. |

Some people like to throw their socks in the washer with some bleach plus extra rinse cycle. Wife wouldn't let me do that so I just pressure wash mine outside and let completely dry in the sun. Having a lot of extra socks on hand also helps. I have like 50 socks in hand.

If you're OCD and need them super white, you can also use hydrogen peroxide if you want to avoid bleach.
But a good pressure wash or a just a nice strong jet from the hose will work and then a dry cycle in the sun. |

Oh and I definitely second having a number of extra socks on hand. At least 3x the amount in your sump, but the more the merrier!

I have seen this posted several times now. I tried it once, socks were just as brown as they were going in. Maybe I did something wrong? Not sure, but now I soak in a bucket of bleach and just throw them in the washing machine.

I wash mine in the washing machine with a little bit of un-scented bleach and a 2nd rinse cycle. I then let them air dry. I've been using this method for several years. Don't ever use soap. Unless they are the mesh style socks, felt socks will never get completely clean by just rinsing them and you will be left with dried organics in the felt. Some use vinegar, some use peroxide but I've always found that washing in the washing machine bleach results in the cleanest socks that take longer to clog up. If they are the mesh style socks, you can get away with just a good hard rinse on those.

I always have to laugh at the "my wife wont let me put filter socks in the washer".
One has to wonder what you do with all the various poop covered articles, from diapers to random clothes, that kids create. Are they not allowed in the washer either? |

I just flip them inside out and throw them in the wash for a long cycle with extra rinse. I don't use bleach or soap, but if they seem extra dingy, I'll soak them in peroxide for a while before throwing them in.

Bleach in the washing machine with an extra rinse cycle here too. Works like a champ. If they are particularly dirty, I do rinse them first.

Thank each and every last one of you for answering. My sock came out very brown from the sump I think I will use a cap full of bleach. You guys are the best. It is nice to be able to come somewhere and get clear answers and not be ridiculed for not knowing. Thank you guys once again.
