Lighting on a refugium

Hello, I've seen many diagrams and noticed that some refugiums have a lighting system while others don't. Do I need to have a lighting system in a refugium. Thank you.

Not sure about those without light, but fuge is where macroalgae is grow to control no3&po4 and at the samw time culture pods..

If you plan to keep and grow light requiring livestock then, yes you'll need a light.
