Skimmer selection (noise)

All,

I currently run an Octopus 110 classic on my 50 gal. It has served me well however, it is very noise. Any suggestions on something more quiet?

Sorry, the new model will need to fit in my Trigger sump compartment which measures 11.5 x 9"

Is the noise from the pump or the air intake?

If it's the pump, make sure it's clean. Needlewheel pumps can get snail shells or other debris stuck in the needles and when that happens they can get very noisy.

If it's the air intake, consider making a silencer. You can probably google for ideas. It's common to use a pill bottle or film canister - you poke two holes in it, insert short pieces of rigid airline, and stick it on the end of the airline running to your venturi. It can make a huge difference in the noise level - I've had skimmers go from the loudest thing in the house to undetectable by putting a silencer on.

I have a silencer but primarily, it's the water exiting the skimmer. It sounds like water running constantly.

Is it the model with the gate valve? How high up is the exit from the valve relative to your water level? Maybe you could lower it so it's submerged or raise the water level.

Yes, has the gate valve. The return is even with the water. Not looking to fix anything at this point (tried it all). Looking for replacement options. Dead silent options.

I just upgraded from a Tunze 9004 to a Bubble Magus Curve 5. Both are pretty much silent, but the Tunze needed 3 days to quiet down whereas the BM quieted down after a day (not to mention much more effective at pulling waste out of the water)!

Pro-teinclean it has been the best decision I've made. Ultra quiet and self tuning. Easily the quietest I've owned.

I have a Bubble Magnus Curve 7 and it is quiet. Does a brilliant job as well! You might need the smaller Curve 5 as suggested already but I recommend BM Curves.
