LFS Fish Turn around

Curious if anyone worked at LFS, how quickly are the fish sold, how long
are they held in those really small compartments.

Is there a reason not to purchase ones that are housed in the small compartments? looks like maybe 4"-6" cubes

Depends on the LFS. The chain stores, more often have inexperienced employees and unknowledgable about saltwater. But each is different. If you go to the LFS, you can build a relationship with them and get a "feel" for how helpful they can be. They should know about how long they've had their fish. You should be able to ask them to feed them. Eating is a good indicator of how healthy they are. At least a quick one, but maybe not necessarily long term health. Hope this helps you. I know in my case I am on a first name basis with my LFS owner and most of the employees.

Same here, although the place that I’ve been going to doesn’t know my name. He knows my face. He’ll tell me how long he’s had fish. He’ll feed them for me. One time recently, the fish weren’t eating. He told me to hold off, but kept two for me. I went back a week later and bought. He also posts his purchases on Facebook, so I could look there - although I trust him.

It can be slow to go in there, but that’s only because he spends time with each customer. He doesn’t rush anyone.

IMO, it depends on what people want. I think your more common fish like Coral Beauty, Foxface ,etc. sells quicker than other uncommon fish. Most stores that have exotic fish may not get purchase b/c of their requirements (tank size, mature size, aggressiveness, compatibility). So a dwarf angel will probably sell quicker than a Niger Trigger. This leads to LFS only selling common fish. So when customers go in looking, they already most of the fish for sale, if that makes sense.

When I worked part-time at a LFS (and dated the owner - got really good prices) Tuesday was fish day. A large part of the new fish were sold by Wednesday. There were a couple of trade-ins that were there for months. We did a lot of special orders so they were gone while still in the shipping bags.

My LFS gets them in on Wednesday night, and the majority is usually sold by Thursday. They use individual tanks though, not the little divided cubes.
