What would you do. Repair or 50 percent off Ecotech Reeflink?
I was ripped off by a user in the for sale forum (buyer beware) and was sold a broken reef link. After a few hours on the phone with Ecotech they offered the choice of a new one for 50% off OR myself paying shipping to send it in and see if it can be repaired. Has anyone been through this? What would you do?

If it were me, I'd probably just buy the new one. At 50% off, it's only $50. You'll spend probably $10-$15 to ship it and if they can't fix it, you'll probably end up buying another one anyway.

Did you use Paypal for paying for the pump? Have you requested a refund from the seller? Always make sure to use Paypal. The will get you the money back or credit you for the amount.

My reeflink has "broken" twice in 3 years time. It was fixed once and I was sent a new one the second time. I personally think they are way over rated but definitely a nice feature to add to Ecotech. You will find some things Ecotech makes are better than others, the reeflink and vectra pumps are two products that seem to be prone to failure

Thanks for the information. Yes, I did use Paypal for the payment (goods/services, not friends and family). After talking with Ecotech and deciding to buy a new one I plan on contacting him and paypal now about the sale. After sending him the money and waiting a few days, it came in just the Ecotech box. There was zero padding around it, it was not even in an envelope. Also, he did not include the usb-male to usb-male cord that users need to program and hook into the computer. Then after another few days I received the cord. Neither packages had an address from him on it. I have been on RC for a while and have never had a transaction like this. Very frustrating but again... buyer beware. AND thanks everyone for their opinions. I decided to go with the 50 percent off a used/new one from Ecotech. |

You don't say in what way the ReefLink is broken. Maybe its just a connection issue. The ReefLink is notorious for not being very reliable.

I just happened to stumble across this thread and believe I am the seller you are claiming "ripped you off." I would like to assure you that reeflink was in perfect working condition when it left my possession. There are a few things (most of them actually) in your statements that are incorrect. You paypal'd me the money on Oct 3rd and the unit was shipped out on the 4th so it was not days later it was the very next day. I put it in the original packaging that the manufacturer ships those units out in. If they do not bubble wrap it or put the box inside it's very own crate why would I need to ship it any differently? The replacement you will get will arrive in the exact same packaging as mine did. It is a plastic box with a computer board in it. There is no glass or anything fragile about it.
The one truth is that the unit did arrive to you without the USB cord. I am shutting down my entire 225g system and I have cords everywhere. Plus it's been forever since I have set that up and forgot all about it even coming with that cord. When you reported that to me I offered to overnight it to you and you said that wouldn't be necessary. So I shipped that to you on my dime on Oct 10th the day after you reported that to me as well and it arrived 3 days later on Oct 13th. It was a stupid mistake on my part and I did what I could to make it right. This is the first I've heard about the unit since I shipped the cord. You never bothered to contact me and tell me you were having problems with the unit and probably still wouldn't have had I not found this thread. Had you contacted me I would have advised you to file a claim with UPS which is likely the culprit of the damages. You never asked me to insure the shipment, which btw UPS covers all shipments with up to $100 in insurance for free. We could have worked that issue out with the carrier but not that option is gone. I would have even entertained the idea of splitting the Return shipping with you back to ecotech to have it repaired which should have been the option you should have taken. There is nothing on that device that wears over time. It's a plastic box with a control board and an RF chip. You replace any of that and it's brand new again. $12 and you would be back on the road. There is no reason to spend $50 for the exact same thing. I don't feel however that I owe you anything as what is to stop any buyer from claiming something arrived damaged when it could have been them that damaged it, the carrier or the buyer that doesn't know how to properly install it in the first place. I am selling my 3rd full system and have sold probably $15k worth of equipment, much of it over the internet and not one person has ever complained about me at all. You won't disclose to anyone what it actually happening with the unit which seems odd. These are notorious for having long blackout periods where they don't have any connectivity. For all I know you could be experiencing that. I'm sure PayPal will contact me for my side of the story and I will make sure they know the same thing. I've got proof that I was willing to work with you on the cord issue I caused and that no further issues were ever reported to me from yourself in this thread. I can't fix a problem I don't know about. I'm very sorry all of this "happened to" you and it is never my intent to rip anyone off. I just wanted to post my side of the story since I don't appreciate my character being smeared on the internet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
