Weird algae
Hey guys new to the page, I'm running a jbj 45RL reef. It's been running for about 5 months now and everything has been pretty good. But this weird algae appeared and I've never seen it before any ideas? IMG_0273.jpg

It looks like a sponge to be. Possibly a bacteria mat, but my money is on the sponge.

I was thinking sponge or some type if bubble algae, but nothing I've seen. Let the post ride a couple days and see if anyone gives you one if those "I had that" replies.

That looks a lot like a bacteria mat. Are you carbon dosing?

Not burning my candles near the tank, I am running a innovative marine reactor with carbon and gfo and on my last change I put a lot more carbon in than usual maybe the cause? And yes those are bubbles that are getting trapped in it (not green) and I think the're gone now. I'll get a better picture when the lights are on. Thanks!

I've personally never seen anything like this cause harm, but I'm sure someone has some anecdotal evidence. |

Now it seems that its "extensive" use of such products.. True or not IDK... but there surely seems to be something there.. An excerpt from an article: The root of the problem is a common bacteria, Alcaligenes xylosoxidans, found wherever humans congregate and known for its copious slime production. It grows out of control when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phalates are present in high concentrations. The plug‐in deodorizers contain a fair amount of both compound groups,

That picture was in my tank. It was the only chunk of rock I had that wasn't new white Marco rock. So whatever gunk was left in it, was slowly leaching out in bubbles and goo. Didn't last long. Cleared right up after a week or two.

Here's a recent pic with lights on looks like it's getting worse and spreading, guess I'm going to have to do a water change and brush it all off |
