Mag 3 should be fine. There is an adjustment for height on the over flow box so just play with that a little bit. The over flow will only drain the amount of water being returned to the tank

If you're worried about losing siphon due to an undersized pump, it's really cheap to add a continuous-siphon mod to an eshopps overflow tube. Get self-tapping 1/4" slip adapters for the top of the tube, use 1"4" air line to run it to a Tom's Aqualifter pump, and run the return from the pump to the rear side of the overflow.
This won't boost your flow rate, all it does is keep the tube full of water rather than running with a large air pocket in it. It also makes restarting the overflow an automated process in the case of power loss... |

I would go with the 800. It definitely can't do the states GPH. It's the one I use and wish I had done a bigger one. I made a modified standpipe to quiet the drain. Pics of it on my build thread.

As stated above -- the secret to keeping bubbles from forming @ the top of the "U" tube
is enough flow to carry them out of the tube.

I've been happy with the CS90 overflow on my 30G and only had a small flood once when the air line to the aqualifter got clogged.
If you do go with an air line to the overflo mod, or with CS 90 series, would recommend a black airline tubing. https://www.marinedepot.com/CPR_CS90...FIOFEB-vi.html |

Adding a pump is adding one more place to fail. I've run the EShopps almost 2 years with zero issues. Never fails to start after power out. Use a gate valve on your return to fine tune flow and make sure bubbles go through the U-Tube and you'll never have a problem. No need to modify anything. Don't fix what isn't broken.
