Refugium Before or After Skimmer (Triton Method)

I am building out a 106 gallon lagoon style tank 48"x32"x16" and looking to implement the Triton method. Wanted to know if any one had an opinion on refugium placement in the sump. Most setups I have noticed have the refugium in line first then the skimmer. I was thinking of skimming first, then a large refugium and finally to the return. Let me know your opinion, set ups, successes or issues.

Thanks

If you run the Refugium first make sure you take proper precautions so your skimmer doesn\t suck up any stray chaeto ect. It will take out impeller very quickly, personally I run my chaeto after my skimmer with screen on my return.

I had my skimmer first then fuge. I really dont think it matters too much either way. A skimmer is not going to remove all nutrients before it gets to the fuge.

Skimmer may pick up beneficial pods before they make it to the display. Because of this many people and sumps are set up skimmer then fuge

The Eshopps channel design is interesting because the refugium flow bypasses the skimmer and feeds right back to the return pump. The setup has about 90% of the water going to the skimmer, 10% or so through the refugium.

I think my skimmer would remove all pods from Fuge in no time. I get the nutrient removal is driving Triton system but don’t want all those pod deaths on my soul. My skimmer is gifts and does get a lot of particles building up fast

I am now considering a split system were 50% of the overflow heads to the refugium and the other 50% to the skimmer then they both would spill over to a return pump in the center. This is got to be a good setup to capture the benefits of not sending the fudge water to the skimmer zone but still getting plenty of interface with both nutrient exporting methods especially with 10xs turnover.

Why do you have this exact thread in 3 different forums?

Why are pods decimated by skimmers that some water goes through but not the return pump all water goes through?
