Rio 1400....VERY LOUD??

Hello! I recently set up my 20g IM Nano again and replaced everything. I went with a Rio 1400 pump and im very dissapointed with it. This pump is VERY loud. Is this normal? It seems as if the impeller is constantly hitting the sides of the housing or something. Ive take it apart and briefly turned it on outside of the water and its painfully loud. I want to replace it.....would a MJ1200 be the best option?

Yes, Rio pumps are terrible - either the Cobalt MaxiJet 1200 or the Sicce 1.5 would be much better options...

Rio pumps have quite a bad reputation with the impellers being unbalanced, hence with them knocking against the housing

I guess I been lucky with my Rio 1700 pushing water up 3 feet for 6 yrs 24/7 to my bucket scrubber. That said had a older 1700 running a skimmer for years which was retired to a mixing bucket which eventually exploded under water and I didn't realize it until I stuck my finger in go figure. Today all my power heads are on GFCI outlets.

While that may be true, every single one I have ever used (6+) has either failed to continue running in short order (a year or less), or has catastrophically failed within the aquarium system, causing damage and/ or death (has happened twice).

Simply put, there are much better and more reliable pumps available for not much more in initial costs...

Zooman what size pumps? I have a semi retired 3100 just used for water changes today, but it is 10+ years old. I have a 2500 that has been running on my skimmer for three plus years, two 2100's one on my 65 Aqueon. the other is on my Planet Aquarium Crystaline tank which came with a Sicce but was so noisy I traded it out for the Rio with my LFS. I have never had one fail. Rio is definitely not close to the best pumps on the market, but I just have not seen the fail rate that you have encountered.

Well, let's see: two different sizes of "HyperFlows" and two different sizes of the smaller Rio +'s (would have to look them up at this point as this was a few years ago to be honest). I replaced all of them with either "original" MaxiJets (which I had used previously) or Sicce Syncras, and while I have had a few of the MaxiJets fail over the years (usually after a number of years), all of the Rio's failed much more quickly.

Since I have a number of smaller marine aquariums running (and have for some time), I have experienced quite a few pieces of equipment, and the failure rate of the Rio pumps was substantial. I am not stating that they are guaranteed to fail in short order, but I don't like their track record personally, and have heard from others of faster than anticipated failure rates. YMMV...
