The "best" salt is the one thats easily available and in budget and has parameters similar to that in which you choose to keep your tank at..
No salt mix is proven to be any better than any other.. Plenty of marketing claims.. Really zero true proof its better..

Mikee - You should let us know what you keep in your tank. Also the size of your tank. Do you, or will you, dose?
As Bent notes, there are lots of opinions on the best salt, but knowing what you keep (or intend to keep) will help people give you suggestions. Thanks, Hitch

Took me too long to find this thread, but this was a fairly recent discussion about salt, prices with several suggestions.

Sorry if I was cryptic in my response. I was short on time.
As everyone stated, the best salt is what fits your budget and needs. There are a lot of claims made out there with zero, and I mean zero veracity to any of them. If you have a large coral load, are dosing two part and mag already, there is really no need for a boutique expensive salt. In this situation, it’s much cheaper to just adjust your dosing and use some form of cheap salt that contains very little in the way of additives. Often times these salts will cause problems more than helping them in this situation due to possibly overdosing. If your coral load is mild and you don’t want to start dosing things, you can use one of those more expensive salts and just maintain levels with regular water changes. So really, you can get any salt to fit your needs. It just really depends on what your application is.

The salt that I’ve personally liked best is ESV. It comes in four parts so it’s more work, but it mixes crystal clear, I’ve never had it precipitate out calcium and the alk levels are near sea water levels which is great when you’re carbon dosing. The other nice thing is since it comes in four parts, you can boost your magnesium/etc up if needed. It’s also super consistent. I don’t have to worry about a bucket not being mixed properly. I’ve used a lot of different brands and ESV is my favorite by a pretty wide margin. My least favorite is IO. I know it’s not exactly a reef salt, but many people use it and it’s awful. Bad parameters and it leaves a nasty brown residue on everything. I don’t want my NSW to look nastier than the water I’m taking out.
