A sign of the end?
Today I have been shopping our sponsors livestock sights for Fourth of July sales. I don’t remember ever seeing so many corals and fish “out of stock” on these sights ever before. Maybe aquacultured specimens will save us, but at a cost that is just high enough to force most out of the hobby.

Our LFS does not order livestock before a holiday because shipments get delayed for a day or two, not good for the livestock. Same with extreme heat.

In addition, any of the larger vendors have plenty in stock. wwc, aqua sd, boom corals, battle corals, unique corals, etc... Take your pick

Hawaii is closed right now and I can still find Yellow tangs around my area and our selection is VASTLY worse then what you guys are able to buy/sell down there in the US. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I noticed a lot of stores I have gone to lately have had yellow tangs and a lot of them. I thought Hawaii was banned? Are they are getting them from someplace else?

I believe Hawaiian fish can still be caught for the trade if you have a commercial license, not sure how lucrative that is though.

I wouldn't say the sky is falling but I will say things are a bit odd right now. And when some fish do come in they are stupidly priced. Not sure what is going to correct what at the moment. I know I have personally looking for a trio of Millesteed Butterflies but not found a decent source. That may have to wait till winter now due to weather (heat) and lack of a QT being set up.
Anyway waiting for dollars and sense to kick in - not knee jerk reactions to make a huge ROI off of fear.

I saw an Achilles Tangs going for $1,200 + taxes up here last week. And no it was not a show size fish.

For SPS, clams and LR you need a CITES import permit which you can get. Only problem is now with a lot of the aquacultured SPS and clams being bred in the US, its getting more difficult to identify exactly what species and location the mother colony came from in the wild.... which essentially means you cannot import as that is one of the things required for CITES approval. A TON of breeders and wholesalers in the US won't ship to Canada simply because its too much effort and run-around to get CITES approval, not to mention next day air when you cross the border is exponentially more expensive. Plus there are duties, taxes, ect. before your shipment can clear customs. The above is my understanding, If anyone plans to import or cross the boarder they should do their own research...

I try to only buy from RC sponsors when buying livestock online. I have never so many corals “out of stock” before. It’s funny how I said that “from RC sponsors” in my original post, then someone proceeds to tell me all about other LFS that are not sponsors. Reading comprehension?
