What brand of carbon do you use?

I was wondering what are the brand of Activated Carbon do most use? Being that many brands claim to be Phosphate free, I know many have tested and have also found ones that claim Phosphate free do release phosphate.

So if you are using other brands, did you test the carbon for Phosphate?

Thanks
Jim

I use Chemi-Pure. Also, Black Diamond is a very popular choice amongst Marine Aquarists.

The reason for the poll is because I just tested a new brand so to speak, and it tested 0.5ppm on my Salifert kit. Even though the box says Phosphate Free. I'll defer from naming the brand until I hear back from the company.

Black Diamond used to have a stay fresh plastic seal under the lid, but I've noticed with my last two jars of Black Diamond that there's no seal anymore - there's just the lid. I use Black Diamond because it was tested low to no phosphate in some old test, and it's priced well.

s13silvia, thanks for the reference. Ahh, but there wasn't a poll. j/k

Since PO4 has been a sensitive subject with me, I'm trying to find an inexpensive alternative to activated carbon and also use it in my RO/DI unit. I am currently packing Black Diamond in a refillable cartridge and using it as the carbon filtration in my RO/DI unit. So far so good, but can get costly over time.

I've also heard that Purigen does an excellent job in clarifying water... how long do you keep it running?

Purigen will change color on you when it needs changing, so I just change it and leave it in 24/7. They say you can regenerate it, with bleach I think. I never tried it. Washing media with bleach for reuse in my tank scares me!

Black Diamond

Funny how what seems to be the #1 choice isn't even a choice in the poll.

Sorry,
Jim
