Crocea Bleaching Caused by a heater malfunction tank meltdown!!
Hello,
Last week I lost half my tank due to a meltdown from a heater, Basically I just purchased one of the Won Brother Heaters with the seperate probe for temperature control and when I was moving the tank due to a sump that would not fit into my stand through the stand door, I moved everything to a rubbermade tub with your basic life support and all the live rock. Anyway to make a long story short the sump still would not fit, was off by a 1/16th of an inch so I decided I had no choice but to go get a new stand. Got a new stand got home and there is this horrible death smell coming from the tub, look in and its cloudy and things are not moving, I put my hands on the outside of the tub for a sec and instantly I can tell whats wrong. Tank is at 105F. I forgot to place the probe back in the tank for the heater so it was trying to heat the water based on the ambient temperature. Anyway almost everything died, lost my 1yr old Derasa However my Green Crocea seems to have made it. The only problem is that it has browned out or in the case of clams bleached out quit a bit. The reflex response from sticking your hand above it is great and has been now for 3 days, also the mantle extension is fine. Is there anything I can do to encourage its recovery? Will it gain back its xoozanthelae? Thanks. |

Bleached clams often recover fully. Feed it plenty of phyto and look into dosing DIN if possible. There is almost certainly at least some zoox left in the clam, and if conditons are good enough it will reproduce and repopulate the clam. It may be especially helpful if there are some corals in the tank which can also give off some zoox to the environment, which the clam may pick up.
