Starting a new 29 gallon tank

I am going to set up the tank on tursday or next monday. I have a few quetions.

1. Would a bubble coral be ok?
2.Where is a good spot to get live rock?
3.How long should i let the tank cycle?

I hope someone can help me.

1 - it depends on a lot of things... mostly your lighting setup. It should be fine with 130+ watts of PC lights. You should also research and find out what kind of flow it likes.

2 - at your local LFS, or from a friend who has an established setup

3 - it depends... just keep testing ( i did every other day until it was done) and when you see your ammonia and nitrites at 0, you can start to add a clean-up crew and move from there. Don't add your "bubble coral" until the cycle is complete!

1. That depends on what you have for lights
2. I'd go to your LFS to get some. You can order if online but shipping cost will be a pain.
3. That is dependent on your system. every tank is different. but around a couple of months

What are you planning on keeping in there?

I have an Eclips twin lamp system for the lights. Would that be ok for the bubble coral?

i had a 29 with the eclipse lid. the filter in the lid is not nearly enough, plus with that lid you will find it difficult to get a hang on the back protein skimmer. once the lid broke (lighting unit) i replaced the lid with a glass lid and dual light strip with 10,000k daylight and actinic bulb. i also have a fluval 304 filter, and i wasnt even using the eclipse filter.

Best thing I bought for my 29g was a HOB refugium. If I got to redo my lighting I would go with T5 lights. The only problem is not many make 30" light fixtures, so you have to either make a canopy or purchase a PC fixture like an Orbit from Current USA.

The lighting is only 30 watts total, which is very dim. I use 110 W of PC lighting for soft corals. The bubble coral probably won't do well with your lighting. You might be able to grow some mushroom corals.

The bio-wheel filtration methods are often avoided in reef setups. I ditched the one in my Eclipse 12g. You could use live rock instead.

I got the odyssea 24" 130 watt and it fits my 29 gallon 30"L tank I got for $80 at www.tfjpetcenter.com or you can check www.bigal.com for the coralife 30" I think its the same wattage as the 24"

The pH for the tank should be somewhere around 8.1 to 8.4 during the day. Sorry, I missed the part where you said no coral. Sigh.

Kabuto, I also have the eclipse 29 gal for a year now....what refugium did you put on your eclipse?
I have softies ,2 percs, serpent, cleanup crew, 40lbs LR ,20 watts each marine glo daylight and actinics....
But, I have the original filter and bio wheel....will it harm the tank if I take out the bio wheel?
Thanks,
M

Maybe. If the live rock isn't ready for the new filtration load, you could see an ammonia spike.

megatsea, I have a generic tank. I think AGA. I bought a 20" CPR HOB Fuge clone from someone on here. Works great. If your Nitrates aren't real high I wouldn't worry much about the biowheel. Just do water changes to bring it down. I used to aim for about 20ppm Nitrates when the tank was a FOWLR. It sits at 0 all the time now with the fuge. Hardly ever test Nitrates anymore.
