Head pressure on pump..Height or lenth?

In order to use a 29gal sump for my 55gal, I can not place it under the stand. We are thinking of running the hose through the wall, into our storage room ( small bedroom we dont use ). Instead of the 3-4 foot lift from under the tank, it would still be a 3-4 lift, but diagonaly, about 5 feet away for the over flow and 8 foot away from the pump.

Do I still figure for a 4' head? Or do I measure the whole lenth of hose as the head?
