I was wondering if anybody has one, and what do they think about it.

I have one. It works good, it's the only skimmer if ever had so I don't have much to compare it to. I've read that they work better with a Mag 7 vs Mag 5 which mine has. It takes some time to dial them in but after you get there it's consistant. I like that they can run ouside the sump easy to clean and low clearance to remove the top.

My friend had a EV-180 for about 2 years and really like it. But recently he traded up for an ASM G3 recirc modified skimmer from ASMSKIMMER.com and it kicks butt... about 3 times more skim than what he use to get with the EV-180.

I have the EV150 which is pretty much the same. It works very well, but takes a bit of tuning to get it right. Once it starts producing though, it works great. Mine goes completely flat anytime I add something to the tank (water change, my hand, additives, food), but it comes back fairly quickly. The stuff it pulls out stinks, that is for sure!

My 180 is performing well now. I just threw a spare Rio 20HF on and it fills up to the drain hose about every 12 hours now. I tried the recomended pump size and 1 bigger and didn't get much production.

I am using a slightly bigger pump than recommended. I switched from a Mag 7 to a Rio 12HF and it pushes the skimmer really well. I have the gate valve completely open and had to restrict the intake side of the skimmer (hose from the pump) a tiny bit so it would not overflow. I am really impressed with the pump needless to say and the skimmer is producing a lot better.

I own one.
It's a skimmer.
Won't buy another one ever again though.

I just replaced mine after using it for 2 years, it skimms and pulls out alot of stuff, but it takes alot of constant adjustmants, one day overskimming the next day no skimming.
I replaced it with a larger skimmer because I will be upgrading my tank soon, my upgrade skimmer is a needle wheel skimmer less constant adjustments.

If anyone here can help me, I just picked up a new EV120 and it just keeps overflowing with bubbles. I soaked it for an hour in hot water before using it. The gate valve and air valve is completely open. I'm using the mag5 that it came with. I also left the drain from the cup open/dropping back into the sump for the breakin period. The water output from the gatevalve is above the sump water level too. Should I just wait a few days since it's a new skimmer? Thanks!

Sounds like too much flow going on.
Restrict the flow a bit.

Overflowing generally means you either have to much flow going in (unlikely with a mag 5), the water level is too high in the skimmer (again unlikely with the gate valve completely open), or you have some kind of restriction in the gate valve. Check the gate valve visually to make sure it is unobstructed.

Ry , if its new you should let it run a couple days to break in. Then if it continues to overflow close the blue air valve some. It says not to close the air valve in the instructions, but with my EV120 and Mag5 pump it would overskimm like crazy if I didnt close the air valve some. I emailed AquaC about it and they said to close the air valve some.

Oh yea, AquaC said not to back off the Mag5 , but to close the air valve some. it works , but it is a contuing adjustment . That is why I got rid of mine.

Thanks again RC and the responses!!! I'm going to let it run for a few days. I hope this will work much better than the ES5-2 that I was running on my 60gal! That euroreef was kicking though, but I got a good deal on this ev120.

Not to jinx u, but I don't think it'll smoke the euro.
I will pick a Euro over the EV any day of the week.
But that is me.

awww...yea that'd suck, I read good things about the EV series though. Hopefully it does just as well if not better than the ER. But yea...if not, what a waste of time and money. haha.

Another thing to check is the water level of your sump. I had to raise mine in my sump, because the water level was too high. Mine wasn't doing much at all with a mag 5, but upgraded to the 7 and now it is kickin' chicken. Nice and nasty, and I have to clean it out, and my 1 gallon collection jug fairly regularly. Give it some time though, and it'll get the job done. Sometime you do have to tune them a bit, but I've been very happy with mine. Considering the ev-1000 for my next tank, but haven't read much on anyone else using that particular model.

Difficult to tune. Put a little AZ-NO3 in the water if it doesn't skim at all. The skimmate is a little watery, but at least it works.

Hey all, just curious what is the different with mounting the EV higher in the sump than on the ground? How does this solve the unstable water level in the sump problem? Right now, I've been running mine for about a week on the sump floor. Gate valve and air valve is completely open. The water level is right ABOVE that part that's inside the skimmer box. I tried to turn down the air valve to lower the water cause it's suppose to be below that point, right??? The bubbles in the skimmer tube is all the way to the bottom and does not seem to rise up teh tube yet unless I close the gate valve a bit. Should I just keep letting it run for another week to break in? And should I raise the skimmer sump water since my sump water level is not stable??? Thanks!

Rich

When I put phos ban in a reactor it didn't skim at all.

Have my Auqa C 120 running on mag 7. Gate and air are open all the way. Works faily well with no adjustments. Very easy to clean.
