Power backup

I live in an area which has a lot of power outages. And it goes out 3 or 4 hours at a time. The last time it went out my tang developed ich.
What do most people do for power back up. I intended to buy a portable generator but it will not do any good if I am not home to hook it up

I do have a UPS (?) backup for computers as one of my power strips. I have a seio on one of the battery backup outlets. Where I'm at I don't have to worry about keeping it warm (on the contrary).
