teflon tape

is it necessary to use teflon tape on pvc thread connections?

I would unless you want leaks.....Most of the pvc threaded pieces will have imperfections along the threads that will cause water to leak without using the tape....Unless it is a section that you need to be able to remove from time to time I would also glue it...unless you are talking about something like unions...most unions you can get by without tape because of the rubber o-rings but I still use tape just for that added assurance

Yes, the tape also acts as a lubricant for the threaded portion allowing a better joint.
