how much skimmate is good for a tank on average ? I can get my skimmer to either do 5 gallons of skimmate a day or 1 gallon. I know it is different depending on what's going on in the tank, but what is a good average ?

Depends on the skimmer.
What type you have?

Regardless, you want the skimmate to be thick and green/brown as possible. If it is pretty clear you are just pulling out good stuff. Sometimes less is better.

I prefer more of a tea color (wet-skimming). Get the gunk out faster. I'm ok with a bit more water going at the same time.
