need advice on pump

on my 46 bowfront ive decided to add a sump.so that i can add some more water volume to the tank to hopefully help with stability.so im putting it in my basement right underneath the tank.im planning on getting a single overflow for it.im thinking thats all i will need.advice on that would be welcome.so what size pump will i need to return the water.im guessing its going to be around 10 feet at the most straight up and over.the pump will be in the sump not plumbed on the outside.

Maybe quiet one, mag drive, eheim or ocean runner would all make a model to work for that. But the devil's in the details, what flow do you want coming back atcha? Do you wanna use this as your main circulation pump or are you have dedicated circulation pumps in a closed loop or powerheads/streams, etc?

i have some of the maxi jet mods in my tank now for circulation.so the pump i would use would be for return flow only.i have a mag 12 now in my 120.could i get by with a mag 7 or 9.im just not sure about the 10' of head pressure.

Mag pumps are not good pumps for head pressure, not a basement sump type of pump. They are flow, not pressure pumps. I'd use an external pressure rated pump. Not sure which one though. If you want a submersible pump, I'd stick with Eheim.

A Quiet One 4000 high head is a good pump, depending on what kind of water flow you are wanting @ the tank

I agree, go with eheim or the quiet one high head. The rest are gonna have a tough time at high head pressure. The largest eheim (1262?) is probably the best bet, or the above mentioned quiet one.

What sized sump do you have? Reason I ask is, if the flow through the sump is too much (caused by too large a return pump), you could end up with micro bubbles in the display. It is becoming more and more accepted to have the return only process 2-5 times the display volume per hour and then use powerheads or a closed loop on the main tank. Whether or not you choose this route is totally up to you, but it is a safer way to play it for micro bubbles and extra protection in case a pump gives (not bing dependant on one pump).
So with that out of the way, you could go for the more popular brands like velocity, gen x, iwaki, etc etc. Really are ALOT of choices for externals. Just depends on how much flow you want.
