ok so what are the nescessary or very helpful upgardes to this skimmer and what size sohuld i get for a 40 gallon

just get the 65 size --you dont need to upgrade anything---I 've owned both the 65 and 125. if you need to increase performance --run it w/ ozone

 med mod for that skimmer is the Deltec mod ... best mod made for the HOB... LOL
