Normal Sound level for a ASM G-1 Skimmer w/ sedra pump

Hello,

Just wondering if you could take a listen to this and let me know if this is normal. Because I really feel that this is far from normal. I bought this skimmer off someone on another reef related site and I am told this is not loud. However it is 4 times as loud as the Remora I replaced it with.

I am standing about 2 feet from the tank when I took this recording. It is still pretty loud acroos the room about 14 feet as well though.

Sounds a bit loud yes. I can't hear mine over the water being dumped into the sump. Have you checked for a blockage in the air line? If you cover the air line does the noise go away?

Josh125,

When I cover the line, it still sounds the same.

Well Im pretty ticked because I got this used from someone on another reef board and he swears that he tested before he sold it to me and that it was not "loud". So now Im probably going to have to buy a new pump which means I saved absolutely no money on this deal!! The worst part is the guy is acting like Im crazy and will not take the thing back! He tells me to sell the item, but now I have to tell the next person about the problem! Sucks.

My G-1X isn't too loud. Try putting your finger over the venturi intake.. does that take away a lot of the noise?

If it does, you should make an air silencer. Pretty much a short 3-4" piece of 1" PVC filled with cotton balls/etc. To attach your venturi, drill a hole in a 1" PVC cap and stick the venturi on it.

I tried taking the pump off and taking the impellar out and resetting it, but no luck.

Sorry that's all I can offer. Two suggestions though. Post your question in the ASM owner thread or head over to asmskimmers.com and post on their board.

Okay I took the pump apart again and looked at the impellar itself, thanks to Joe at http://www.asmskimmer.com/ I got more encouragement to look at the pump more carefully. Sure enough I found something odd. Is this normal? Lol! Seems like it was allowed to run dry and then this happened or a piece of gravel got in there. The impellar holder itself seems okay not any damage like the magnet.

The only problem is noone apparantly sells this impellar anymore because most people are using the 3500 pump. Can you use the impellar from a 3500 on a 2500?

Thanks.

Joe or Rob at ASMskimmer could probably answer that for you. They sell the impellers too.

Anemonebuff,

Yeah I have spoke with Joe. Very nice guy. He had me send an email to Rob. So waiting on a reply from Rob.

I know they no longer have the 2500 pump impellars, but they do have the 3500 which might work in the 2500 so I am waiting for that answer.

Thanks.

You would need someone with both impellers to try/compare them.

RichConley,

Yeah I sent him a pic and a soundbyte and he is in total denial that it is his problem. He contest that I had lose gravel in my system and that is what caused this.

However it did this from day one and I dont run any sand in my system. BB system.

Joe suggested that it was probably allowed to run dry and that this is what caused this.

I really feel this guy is fully aware of this fact and basically knows that it will be hard to prove who is at fault here and is using this to his advantage.

Post pretty much exactly all this stuff on the forum that the deal was arranged from. Others should know that hes not a good person to buy stuff from.

Rich,

Yeah I did that. Thanks. It sucks though because its pretty much my word against his.

He is very angry and making stuff up like:

I waited 2 weeks to tell him about this, 1 of those weeks was spent waiting for the item to arrive. I complained to him about the noise the first day and he told me it was not noisy and that he tested it before it left. He is very crafty.

He claims I lied about the total I paid for this. I made an error I thought I paid $140 altogether it really was $134, that was a mistake. He thinks because he paid an extra $5 to ship it I should be greatful to wich I am, but it is not my fault he did not calculate the shipping correctly.

He is saying I told him it does fit my sump, I actually told him it barely fit because he told me it would fit before he sold the item.
