Most importantly, evaporation shows up in the sump. Some people here incorrectly state that evaporation happens here but of course evaporation happens everywhere. Regardless, over the course of a week, the water level in the sump will get lower while the water level in the display tank remains constant. This is why automatic top off's are placed in the sump.

In addition to that, sumps provide a spot for those unsightly items like thermometers, pH probes, ORP probes, skimmers, calcium reactors, phosphate reactors, etc.

Your question makes it sound as if you are trying to decide if you want a sump or not. Trust me, you do!

Also,

A sump also provides additional volume to help minimize the effects of a chemistry change. For example, if you happen to overdose a reef chemical, it will have a lesser effect on a larger volume than it would a smaller one.
