Is the strength of a starphire glass the same as regular glass

My LFS guy is trying to tell me that starphire glass breaks in a few years. The guy is very annoying and tell people anything so that they will buy from him so I don't really know what to think. Does any one have one that they have had for a while?

i would say it at least as strong if not more, just from reading on this site, alot of the bigger tanks, like 500's etc, use starfire, thats a huge investment to loose in "a few years" iyou need a new lfs guy, he'd gladly sell you one if he had it there i bet and not mention anything about it breaking

Starfire and other iron-free (less green/more clear) glasses are slightly weaker than standard aquarium glass. All that means is that reputable aquarium makers that use starfire glass use thicker panes of glass when they need to. Even with the thicker glass you get better color and visibility which is why you see it used on so many large tanks.

The LFS guy is trying to sell you something if he's telling you starfire breaks "in a few years" -- it's not like glass deterioriates.

There are several good custom shops that use starfire and produce quality tanks -- just do a search on the vendor experiences forum or ask in the large tanks forum.

Plus he was trying to tell me that it doesn't make a differece once the tank is full. That it isn't any clearer. I'm getting mine from AO 300gl.

And NO it was my LFS OWNER who was telling me this. He the kind of guy who gets mad at you if you order stuff offline and don't buy or order it through him. Even if it costs more. Hes a dumb A** and I really don't buy anything from his since he acts like that. Unless he has something I really want

Starphire Glass is Quality Glass and can be in many cases stronger than 'regular' or especially cheap glass. Compared with Non-Starphire Quality glass it might be alittle weaker due to the loss of Iron, but this is just a theory IMO. Most fishtanks are not made out of high quality glass, but instead regular or cheap glass are commonly used. Especially if you get that 'steal of a deal' tank...

I am getting it from Aquarium obsessed and I know that have a GREAT REP. So my LFS guy is full of it.
