Good Neighbors or What Goes Next to What?

So I have been reading the thread about corals people most regret purchasing. Most of the regrets are caused by overly aggressive fast-growing corals such as Xenia or green star polyps. I am currently trying to plan out our new tank. We will mostly be concentrating on softies but I'd like to hear discussion in general about which corals people have had good success keeping together. Also, please don't hesitate to mention other organisms like clams and anemones.

What corals/organisms do you absolutely trust right next to each other? What combinations are you particularly pleased with aesthetically?

I am not really sure. I try to give everything in my tank no matter what some room for growth and room from any potential harmful neighbors. It appears to be working out well but I have seen a few tanks completely loaded and wonder myself on how they do it without stuff raging war on each other.

Nobody has any input? Are we all just using trial and error?
