what should salt be at?

hi there, i have 2 clowns, a gbta, a manderine 2 shrimps some hermits and turbo snails, my salt is at 1.023 is this ok havng read lots of threads on this site i think it should be higher can i have some opinions please. many thanks

for the mandarin and bta raise it to around 1.024-1.025 just to be on the safe side
I hope u have a big established tank for the livestock u have

I shoot for 1.025, but 1.023 is not bad. I would try to up it a little with your next few water changes. Don't go over 1.026.
What size your tank is, how much you evaporate, and how you deal with evaporation are all important factors to consider. If you're lazy about top off, you are better off leaving it where it is. (Actually, better to get in the habit of daily top offs)

hi thanks for your replys i have a 70gallon tank (310 litres) at the moment i dont get much evaporation just filling up with my weekly water changes, may change as we go into summer!!!! (if we have one!!!)

The question you opened the thread with was pretty basic, so I'm going to assume that you are pretty new to the hobby.
You should be aware that salt does not evaporate. As the water in your tank evaporates, the salt stays behind. Same amount of salt in less water = higher salinity. A lot of people have problems with that, especially those with small tanks (10 or 20 gallons). Depending on evap rates, it's very possible for you to run into the same problem. I say get used to topping off daily, even if it's only a small amount.

not that new to hobby use to have a fish only tank about 6years ago but had to stop because of new house that needed lots of work to it, this tank been going about 5months now and just refeshing memory lfs said that 1.023 for salt was ok but just readng other peoples threads thought id ask.

That's a nice looking setup you have there. Some more live rock would probably make it look a bit more interesting, though, especially if you're planning on adding corals at some point.

Don't be insulted, I realize every day that there is so much more to learn than what I know now. I just didn't want to let that little piece of info slip by if you didn't already know it.

Also you will need alot more rock if you want to keep your mandarine alive for any length of time. Is it eating frozen mysis, if not I would really try to train it onto frozen foods (not brine shrimp). Live bloodworm are a good way to do this

hi again sorry not been on for a while been away for a few days.... am planing on getting more lve roc soon and yes the mandarine is eatin frozen food readily (mysis and brime) im very lucky there, but saw it eating in the shop.... i have now raised the salt to about 1.025 so will see how things go from there. thanks for all the replys, i think this is a great site and have learnt alot since spaending half my time reading all threads
