is this what I get for buying cheap thermometer?

Any suggestions are appreciated, I have a 120 gallon tank that I am starting, and it is currently filled with water, rocks, and 4x powerhead.
Last week I decided to purchase one of those $2 glass thermometers and threw it into the tank (one of those that sinks to the bottom).
I live in CA and the weather is usueally nice, but even though it is rather cool in the morning the thermometer reads a temp of 78 degrees and this is without a heater on or any lights. When I set my Jager heater to 79, the temp read 87. When I turn on 1x MH the temp read 85. Is the thermometer off? If not, what could be causing this heat..4x maxi jets? I lived in Indiana and summer were very hot, but the tank still needed heating. Oh, and the tank is not near any window or household heater. Unusual........

Do you have lights on it yet? temps are usualy a bit higher at the top but not that much. Pumps will create half of the heat a tank will receive, lights the other. I like to use external pumps on a closed loop.
