Closed loop help
Anyone know where I can get a diagram for a closed loop system? Just bought a used 100 gal acrylic with a center overflow that's drilled for one. I have no idea how they funciton.
Thanks! |

The hole(s) in the center overflow is/are not for a closed loop. It is your drain to go to your sump. A second hole, if you have one in the overflow, is meant for the sump return plumbing to go through, but many people use it as a secondary emergency drain (I highly recommend the latter).
A closed loop is just a pump plumbed directly to the tank (ie a hole drilled anywhere in the back of the tank connects to the pump inlet, and then the water is simply pumped back into the tank, either through several outlets or a tank perimeter manifold. It is used to create flow in your tank without you having to use a large sump return pump. Here are some threads: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=520145

To make it very simple
Closed Loop - A loop system that is never open to air. A hole is drilled in the tank under where the water level will be...the plumbing goes out of that hole through the pump and back into the tank without ever touching air. You can run it as a syphon system instead of drilling the tank, but I don't recommend it. |
