have tips for cleaning sump?

Does anyone have any ideas/tips on cleaning debris out of the sump?

I have a sump under my tank and the water is about 10" deep. I use a large vacuum to siphon water out of the tank, but siphoning water that isn't very deep has proven difficult. Do I just need to buy a smaller vacuum, or are there other ways?

I put a hose on a powerhead and suck up as much of the detritus as I can.

Sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't have thought of that.
