I have 2. My 20 and 26 gallon tanks. They have heaters, but have not been plugged in for over a year. They do however both have chillers.

I dont run any heaters... I let the system equalize with my house ambient temp. This way there is little risk in having drastic flucuations resulting from the heater 'competing' with the ambient room temperature.

You can do it as long as your room temp stays stable. If you live where your house temp drops to the 60's at night, I wouldn't risk it.

No heaters. I live in Florida, keep the A/C set on 75. I have my chiller turn on at 79. Apparently my pumps produce enough heat to keep my aquarium temp up at night.

Usually heaters are only needed to keep smaller tanks stable. For larger tanks it is often not necessary. I have a 180 with a 50 sump and never run a heater. My tank never fluctuates more than 2 degrees, and usually not more than 1 degree.

no heaters, no chiller. Temperature stays constant at 74 give or take. When the MH comes on, it usually go up between 78-80.

Pumps keep mine warm, and I use a temp controlled fan to cool by evaporation when the weather gets hot. Save a ton on electricity.

my heater turns on at night, so i wouldnt get rid of it.
but i really doubt we need ans many watts as the manufacturers recommend for tank sizes.. i have a 100w heater, and i bet i could do with a 50watt one.

Could be the rating the manufacturer gives is for fresh water aquariums, where you dont have so much heat generated from lights and multiple pumps.

I would think that if you live in the tropics where the room temp never drops below 70, you don't need a heater. All my pumps keep my tank temperature between 78-82 degrees constantly. Although I have a digital heater that gives me a reading, I've never seen it cooler than 78 degrees. The heater is set at 76 and has never come on.

My old tank was heaterless, unless you count Mag pumps which do a great job of heating water.

unless you have carefully monitored and stable temps like some of these folks, get a heater. Its standard equipment for tropical marine fish.

Pumps and lighting keep the temperature (lights day on main, lights night on prop tank) Turned off my heaters over 5 months ago. Chiller a must in my case.

I have not used a heater on a tank larger than 10 gallons for over 7 years now. In that time I have had one heater malfunction and begin to cook a freshwater tank. Luckily I caught it before it got too hot.

No heater for me. I run 2 x Velocity T4 pumps which are known to run hot. They heat my water fine. I need my chiller going on hot days though.

The only temp control I have is a fan that is set to go at 81 degrees. It cycles on and off when the halides are on but temp never gets much below 79 at night. No chiller.

No heater here (thanks South Florida!) but I have to run a PC fan as a chiller. My temp never goes lower than 72 or hotter than 76. Most day/night cycles the temperature only moves 1 degree.
