lighting and covers

Is there any significant loss of lighting when the top is covered by glass or plexi? I am considering putting a couple halide pendants over my 90 and wasn't sure how close to put them if I cover the tank or keep it uncovered to prevent loss of light penetration. I do have a couple fish that would be considered "jumpers" so I am torn as to what to do. Thank you

I'd be careful using plexiglass with halide pendants. If the pendants are hung too close you'll end up burning the plexi. You can buy a "diffusion grill" material from Home Depot/Lowes that works quite well. It's used to diffuse fluorescent fixtures that are above a drop-down ceiling. Just cut it to fit. It'll stop your fish from jumping out and allow full light penetration.
