I wouldn't use tap water. when I did a long time ago when I first started, I had major algae problems. Use R/O D/I water, it'll save you some hassle. oh yeah and a good way to lower your salinity is to pull out some and save it and add fresh to your tank.

sounds like clnreef nailed this one. dont use tap water at all costs. To lower sg syphon some water out and top off with fresh RO or RO/DI water.

Take a gallon of your salt water out (suggestion, I have no clue how big of a tank you have) and put in straight RO/DI water. Wait a day, repeat until at correct level.

Can't recommend a tap water conditioiner, I don't use them. Just don't add a ton of water or drop it more than .001 per day or you could run the risk of killing your livestock.

No your not doomed by using tap water for a while, I started all of mine of tap water and then switched over to RO/DI after all of my learning mistakes were cured. If you don't have a RO/DI unit and have lug 5 gal jugs around from the water store, it will make this stage easier for you. A few "emergency" water changes could put you out of buisiness if you are lugging jugs around. I personaly would use the tap for a month or so until you get a hang of the whole thing and then switch over. You are going to have blooms as it is being a new tank, and yes there are Phospates and Silicates in tab water that cause algae, your not going to have an out break just because of that. While your cycling, reduce the photoperiod of light to keep algae at bay, get a cleanup crew, get fish when stablized, don't feed too much and you won't have an algae problem. When you got it all down and aren't changing water out like a madman because your alk is off or high amonia. Then switch over. You don't have to have everything at once......but eventually you should get away from tap

you could always check the TDS of your tap water to see how good or bad it is.... mine happens to be 35 ppm straight from the tap (o from the RO) but if i had to do any emergency water change i would use tap...but i wouldnt make a habit of it....
