what would cause this
I normaly drop by the LFS on the way home on friday to just to view the new goodies. Have noticed the new live rock they have been getting lloks rather white, like its been bleached, not like rock where it has no corline algea on it but ghost white, really doesnt look like theres anything alive on the rock. kind of concerned becuse ive been looking for some ruble to filter my nano at work and even that apears to be white

is it in water or is to dry? my LFS has live rock in saltwater and base rock that is dry that is sitting on a shelf. I bought a piece of base rock and with-in 6 mounts it looks like the other live rock in my tank.

it's sitting in water. up untill afew weeks ago they had very nice live rock comming in. now it all looks like this. Would go to another store but they own that as well and it has the same rock.

I think coralline goes white once it is exposed to air
Its a normal process, it goes white and then after couple months all the colors come back

Live rock may sit in boxes, damp, but not submerged for weeks before it is shipped out to retailers. What you may be seeing is the result of a importer bringing in more rock than they could move in a timely fashion. If brilliantly colored rock is placed in freshly mixed water it can also turn to the color,(or lack thereof), you are describing also.

Or maybe they bought base rock hoping to pass it off as live rock.

well i was near the lps today and dropped in. as i know everyone i asked to take a closer look at one of the larger pieces. One the backside there was some white and green coline. you can see under the white substance covering the rest of the rock can see the corline under that white junk, tried scraching some of it off but nothing came off

Coralline also goes white if it's overheated. It will grow back, but not easily where it's gone really chalky and broken down: that stuff has to be brushed off (my emerald crab seems to like it.)
